Neato Robotics Botvac D5 Connected Navigating Robot Vacuum

I already own one similar but much cheaper robo cleaner, ILIFE A4 Robot Vacuum Cleaner, Titanium Gray, and I was interested to see how much better this high end device from Neato compared.

My existing cleaner is small and quiet in use, comes with a remote control which can be used to navigate the device manually as well as to program the single scheduled cleaning option it has. So far I have been very happy with it as it does the basic task of coming to life once a day roaming through the downstairs rooms cleaning as it goes and after about two and a half hours returning to recharge.

The Neato device is a step up in many ways. It has LaserSmart Navigation which allows it to build up a mental map of the floor layout and can clean systematically returning to where it left off if interrupted. It has a wifi connection and is controlled from an Android or iOS smartphone app. This means the device can be started and controlled remotely and the app can show just which areas have been cleaned. It can also now be controlled through the Amazon Echo device range by voice alone. No dedicated remote control unit is included but the unit does have some simple top panel controls.

I found this device cleaned as well if not better as my current device with the D shape of the Neato allowing better access to corners. I found it coped well with both hard surfaces and a thin carpet but I suspect like most robo cleaners it might struggle with a deep pile carpet. The app works well but would work well when the Neato is used in a larger house than mine since both the Neato and the cheaper rival can clean the complete floor rooms with one charge. Like with most robo cleaners I suspect it is best suited to large sparsely furnished hard floored floors and the further away your home is from that ideal the less useful it will be.

Neato is a well known market leader and hopefully spares will be available for this unit for some time to come. My existing cleaner is already discontinued although expecting this I stocked up spare brushes and a battery pack.

This is an excellent device from an established market leader in this field. The Netao is expensive and there are now many cheaper rivals available. If money is no object you will not go far wrong by buying this device.
