FDT 1080P HD WiFi Pan/Tilt IP Camera FD8901

IP cameras of all types are falling rapidly in price. The £100 camera of a year ago can now be found for less than £50. At the same time design and build quality are rising too. This new £64.99 camera from FDT will have to have some above average features to justify the price and I think that it does. This camera arrived well packaged in a medium sized mid market looking box. Inside was the camera itself, a wall/ceiling bracket, USB power cable with UK adaptor, Ethernet cable, wall plug and screw fixing kit, CD containing software and manuals, together with simple but easy to read User Guide. The build quality seems first rate throughout and although the camera is quite large it is well made and looks impressive if rather old school. On the front of the camera is the camera lens and the infrared LED array, the motion detector PIR and microphone. On the rear of the unit are the micro-SD card slot, Reset button, power in port, standard speed Ethernet RJ45 connector, audio out socket and the hard wired wifi antenna. On the side is the built in speaker. Unlike with many of the Foscam clones that this resembles there is no interface for an external alarm system and no detachable antenna connection. This is usually where things get tricky but not so here as both the User Guide and app are very well designed and easy to use. Download the iOs or Android app to your phone and ensure the phone is connected to your home network. Power up the camera and connect the it to your router with the supplied Ethernet cable. Then using the app – I only tested the Android version – follow the on screen instructions to configure the camera as you wish including the with your wifi network password. Once this is done you can disconnect th Ethernet cable and the camera will attach to the wifi network. When testing similar cameras I usually discard the app and and just configure it by using my web browser to connect to the camera directly on the network . No need here as the advised method is quick and easy to use. Note that unlike with many cameras there is no P2P setup option whereby the phone connects directly to a wifi hotspot from the camera for setup. I have found P2P setup often fails and I am not sorry to see it left off here.

Like most similar devices it has motion detection for security use and it records still or video to the app or to the built in microSD card. The motion detection works well and can be set to operate continuously or to a schedule. The video quality is good but and is one of the best I have seen for a camera in this price bracket. It is a pan/tilt camera and so the lens can be tracked across the room to view details and this can be done by just dragging the finger across the image in the app.

As a long term Foscam user I see many similarities to the Foscam hardware here although this camera has improved upon the old design dramatically. Unlike with many rivals almost all the configuration can be done through the app with no need to use the web interface to fine tune it. Again, unlike with most rivals there is no need to register an account before using the app. It has an IR cut feature which means the filter which is used for night time infra red use is removed during daylight to preserve colour fidelity, a feature some cheap Foscam clones lack. It has two way audio which means it can work as an effective baby monitor as well as a security camera. It uses motion detection to generate alerts and when alerted it can send push messages to the phone, record video to the internal SD card, send email snapshots and save snapshots or video to remote ftp servers.

All most users need can be found here. A few more arcane features are lacking: no physical interface to a third party alarm system, no Motion detection zones, no free cloud storage, no SD card included, no 5Ghz wifi support. Most average users will not notice the lack of them.

If you want a good quality rather old school security or baby monitor at a reasonable price then this would be a decent buy
