I already own an iSmartlarm security system – consisting of a hub/alarm, three door contact sensors, a motion sensor, two personal sensors, and a camera (different model) and needed this new £34.99 camera to supplement the system. I will be reviewing it as an add-on device although it will work as a stand-alone unit.
The camera arrived in an elaborate and rather clever box together with an instruction leaflet, mounting kit, UK/EU USB power adaptor and USB cable. All beautifully engineered and with a very modern Silicon Valley feel to them. The camera stand is very flexible and can be used to position the camera in a range of stances. It is held magnetically to the metal disc supplied in the kit which is held by double sided tape to the wall or ceiling.
Installing was easy enough and all through the iSmart Alarm app after I figured out my idiot mistake… You are supposed to scan the barcode generated by the iSmart app with the Spot+ camera and not the barcode on the camera with the app. Stupid, I know, but I can usually be sure of getting these things wrong! Once installed the connection seems fast and stable with very little latency or lag when viewing the video.
Video quality is excellent by day or using the Night Vision and the motion sensor works well without too many false positives for which it has three levels of sensitivity. Video and images can be saved to the camera’s SD Card (no card supplied) or to the cloud where the limited free backup is included. The camera can be set to continuously record to the card, overwriting the earliest records as needed in the way a car dashcam works. The camera also has a built-in audio sensor and can detect if you third party smoke or CO2 alarm goes off and begin recording video and sending alerts.
This is an easy to install and budget priced addition to my iSmart system and rivals much higher priced cameras for functionality, quality and ease of setup.
